Maurice Markovitz was born in 1887 and first went into business with his brother Max. They appeared in Kelly's Business directory in 1906 as Cycle Maker and Repairer. Sadly Max was killed serving with the Sherwood Foresters in the First World War. Maurice continued in business alone, now dealing in motor bikes as well as tools, which he sold by mail order. Kelly's 1932 listing is Ironmonger, Hardware Dealer and Motor Engineer.
On March 1st 1935 Maurice bought the present Commercial Road premises, from Tideswell and Millers Dale Coal and General Merchants Company Ltd for £1200. He was now able to branch out into supplying Building Materials.
Maurice never married. His nephew Brian joined him at Commercial Road in 1953 further developing the business. In 1995 Brian re- located to larger premises on Richard Lane in Tideswell. The Commercial Road premises were converted into our Courtyard Studios, which include a Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom showroom as well as a Stove and Cooker Centre.
Since then, Brian's two sons, David and Robert have taken over the business, and developed it further to now include a second Courtyard Studio in Glossop, and four more depots based in Hadfield, Darley Dale, Buxton and Leek.
From humble beginnings the company now employs over 100 people. We pride ourselves in remaining a Family Run Business, which we are sure Maurice would be proud of.
We have combined builders merchants / plumbers merchants branches throughout Derbyshire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire. Our builders merchants, with incorporated plumbers merchants depots are in Tideswell, Buxton, Hadfield, Darley Dale, Glossop and Leek.
Our fleet of over 30 vehicles deliver building materials and plumbing materials daily throughout Greater Manchester, the High Peak, Sheffield, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Derbyshire Dales, Nottingham, Leek and Staffordshire. We not only cater for the professional Builder, Plumber, Joiner or Electrician, but also the DIY'er. We are open to both the Trade and general public.
Our Courtyard showrooms have extensive displays of Kitchens, Bathrooms, and Fitted Bedrooms. Our Tideswell Stoveshop displays Multi Fuel Stoves, Cookers, Ranges and Fireplace accessories, along with a comprehensive range of cookware and kitchen equipment.

The Courtyard Stove, Range and Cooker Centre is based in Tideswell, Derbyshire. Our showroom displays Ranges, Multi-fuel Stoves, Fireplace accessories and Cookers.
